As its Fall 2019 semester gets well underway, Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College unveiled a new learning center for students. The space is attached to the Student Success Center on the college’s Logan campus, and boasts various work stations, mobile white boards, and pods for group study.
“Our hope is that this space invites students, faculty, and staff to utilize and appreciate it,” Tim Ooten, Southern’s Student Success Center Coordinator, said.
The space includes various work stations, so different types of study and learning can easily be accommodated. The space also can easily host online class cohorts, and comes complete with mobile charging stations for students to conveniently be able to charge electronics.
“We have a banquette that provides a little more privacy,” Ooten said. “And we have desks, and tables where students or faculty can work on their computers.”
“Ultimately, this space will provide a seamless transition for students,” Ooten said. “If they’re visiting our Student Services office, they can come directly into this space. It’s located next to the Logan campus food court, and we hope to have a vendor in that space soon.”
Dianna Toler, Southern’s Director of Disability and Adult Services, emphasized that the space is ADA compliant, so it truly is inclusive for all.
“This is a learning space that will draw students in and foster communication and bonding,” Ooten said. “But, it’s not just for students. We want the whole college to benefit from this space.”
