Mario Longhi joined U. S. Steel in July 2012 to serve as executive vice president & chief operating officer. He was appointed president and chief operating officer in June 2013 and was elected president and chief executive officer in September 2013.
Prior to joining U. S. Steel, Mr. Longhi spent six years at Gerdau Ameristeel Corporation, serving first as president from 2005 through 2006 and then additionally in the role of chief executive officer from 2006 until 2011. Before his arrival at Gerdau Ameristeel, Mr. Longhi spent 23 years at Alcoa, Inc., which he joined in 1982 as a construction superintendent for the company’s Alumar Refinery in his native Brazil. During his time with the company, he advanced through increasingly responsible positions in Brazil, the United States and Switzerland, including tenures as president – Alcoa Wheels International, president – Alcoa Forgings Division, president and chief executive officer – Howmet Castings, and Alcoa vice president and group president – Global Extrusions.
Mr. Longhi began his career in the metals industry in 1978 as an engineer at Cobrasma, a Babcock and Wilcox licensee for the sale, design and manufacture of pressure vessels for use in South America. A native of Tatui, state of São Paulo, Brazil, Mr. Longhi earned a bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering from the Institute Mauá de Tecnologica in São Paulo. He became an American citizen in 2007.
Mr. Longhi serves as a member of the board of directors of RTI International Metals, Inc. During his career, he has also been active in several prominent industry trade associations and has served as chairman, director and executive committee member of the Steel Manufacturers Association and director of the American Iron and Steel Institute.
