The 26th annual Bernie Hutzler Golf Classic, sponsored by University Healthcare, will be held on Monday, June 3 at Cress Creek in Shepherdstown.
Under the leadership of Co-Chairs Montie Hicks, Chris Colbert, and Selwyn Persad, the tournament committee expects to raise $55,000 to benefit both Berkeley Medical Center in Martinsburg and Jefferson Medical Center in Ranson.
To date, over $1.2 million has been raised from this tournament to fund patient care equipment and new programs and services at both hospitals. This year’s tournament will feature two flights, giving golfers a choice of morning or afternoon play. The awards reception will follow afternoon play at the Cress Creek club house.
“We are very excited to be hosting our 26th annual tournament this year,” stated Teresa McCabe, vice president of Marketing and Development at University Healthcare. “Some of us were involved in organizing the inaugural tournament in 1988. It was then and still remains one of the area’s premier golf events, and we are proud to have it associated with our University Healthcare hospitals.”
Formerly known as the Gateway Golf Classic, the tournament was renamed in 2009 in memory of one of its founders, Dr. Bernie Hutzler. As has been tradition over the years, the winning team decides how the proceeds will be used. Last year, the money was used to support the cath lab at Berkeley Medical Center and women’s imaging at Jefferson Medical Center.
