Plans for the 26th annual Bernie Hutzler Golf Classic, benefiting WVU Hospitals-East City Hospital in Martinsburg and Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson, have been announced.
The annual golf fund raiser will be held on Monday, June 3 at Cress Creek in Shepherdstown. This year’s goal has been set at $60,000, with proceeds from the tournament directed to fund patient care equipment at both hospitals.
The tournament will feature two flights with shotgun starting at 7:45 am and 1 pm. Registration will begin 30 minutes prior to the start of each flight. Flight preference will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis. Golfers may form their own teams but will be subject to handicap restrictions as determined by the Golf Pro at Cress Creek.
Sponsorship and golfer packages are now available including the $5000 Presenting, $2500 Underwriting, $1000 Sponsor, $500 Patron, and $200 Golfer packages. All include lunch, which will be served beginning at 11:45 am, and an awards reception to be held at the Cress Creek clubhouse immediately following afternoon play. Each golfer will also receive a commemorative gift.
Formerly known as the Gateway Golf Classic, this tournament was established in 1988 as a fund raiser and “friend” raiser for City Hospital. In 2009, the tournament was renamed the Bernie Hutzler Golf Classic in memory of WVUH-East Charter Board Director and Inaugural Golf Classic Committee Member Dr. James “Bernie” Hutzler. A year later, the tournament was expanded to benefit both WVUH-East hospitals. To date, over $1.25 million in proceeds has been raised in support of the hospitals as a result of past golf tournaments.
