West Virginia University at Parkersburg is adding additional services for the Center for Early Learning. The childcare facility will introduce a new class starting in Fall 2015 and two new services this summer.
Starting this fall, the center will introduce a pre-k class for children ages 3 to 4. Parents can enroll potty trained children in the three-day Monday, Wednesday and Friday option or the two-day Tuesday and Thursday option. Classes are available from 9 a.m. to noon or 1 p.m. to 3.
Classes are designed to prepare children for public pre-k or kindergarten through hands-on activities. All classes will be taught by Angela Davis, center for early leaning director. Davis has over 20 years of experience in early childhood and elementary education and a bachelor’s degree in education. Parents can also take advantage of childcare before and after classes for an additional cost.
The college’s state-of-the-art Center for Early Learning offers childcare to both WVU Parkersburg students and employees and to the general public for children aged 13 months to 5 years.
“I really love it,” said WVU Parkersburg student, Tiffany Cross whose two children attend the center. “Both of my kids really enjoy all of the activities that are offered. Zachary, who is in the pre-K classroom, learned all kinds of new dances and my toddler, Owen, was taught some sign language to help with speech difficulties he had. It has been a huge help. The caregivers are all excellent and I absolutely love taking my kids there. It makes everything easier because my kids really love it.”
New summer services include additional summer care for school aged children, ages 6 to 8, with fun outdoor activities planned for each day. The center will also offer four exciting camps for preschool children, ages 3 to 5, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Summer camps include:
Art Camp
June 15 – June 19 – Children will experience different art media through a daily theme. Tools and material will include clay, painting on canvas, paper mache and more.
Music Camp
June 22 – June 26 – Join the music camp and experience music from around the world. Children will experience music from a different country each day through singing, dancing, games and karaoke. They will also hear different instruments played by special guest presenters and get to make musical instruments of their own to take home.
Science Camp
July 6 – July 10 – Through hands-on experiences, children will learn about the weather, the five senses, magnetism and biology. They will also walk away with lots of ‘make it and take it’ science activities.
Safety Camp
July 13 – July 17 – Similar to safety town, the safety camp will include area fire departments, the police department, ambulance, the Division of Wildlife and more who will interact with children while they learn all kinds of important safety rules.
Resources are available for college students who need assistance paying for childcare in order to attend classes. The 5,000 square-foot center focuses on the arts, literacy, culture and technology to teach young children beyond the traditional classroom environment. It also offers hand-on learning experience to students enrolled in the Child Development Program.
