Dr. Melissa Spivy, West Virginia University at Parkersburg assistant professor of education and Kappa Delta Pi (KDP) Sigma Omega Chapter counselor, has won the 2014-2015 Southeast Regional Chapter Counselor award. This award recognizes counselors from each region who excel in their roles.

Spivy was selected by a panel of judges for her outstanding leadership skills and representation of the mission and ideals of KDP. Student officers in WVU Parkersburg’s local chapter nominated Spivy for the award.

“Dr. Spivy deserves to be recognized for her outstanding commitment to us, our education program, our college and Kappa Delta Pi,” said the Kappa Delta Pi officers of the Sigma Omega Chapter in a joint letter. “Without Dr. Spivy, our organization would more than likely cease to exist. We are proud to call her ours.”

“I am humbled by this award primarily because it was initiated by the officers of WVU Parkersburg’s KDP chapter,” said Dr. Spivy. “Working with our students is the highlight of my job as a faculty member; it is such an honor to be recognized in this way.”

For this award, Dr. Spivy was judged and scored higher than other nominees in categories of modeling leadership, motivating and communicating with chapter members, impacting the careers of chapter officers and members, involvement in chapter programs and activities, and exemplifying the mission and ideals of the Society. She will be receiving a certificate, her name will be featured on the Kappa Delta Pi blog and main website and she will be recognized with a plaque at Convocation 2015 in Orlando, FL in October.
