Those interested in earning a master’s degree in social work are invited to an informational session, Tuesday, Jan. 26, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Erickson Alumni Center on the campus of West Virginia State University (WVSU).
Through an innovative collaborative partnership between WVSU and West Virginia University (WVU), students will be able to earn a master’s degree in social work in as little as one year beginning in August 2016.
Classes will be offered at two convenient locations in the Kanawha Valley; on the WVSU Institute campus and at WVU Charleston, Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center, in Kanawha City.
“This partnership between West Virginia’s only two land-grant universities will make earning a master’s degree in social work an obtainable option for both traditional students, and for those who continue to work while studying,” said WVSU President Dr. Brian O. Hemphill.
Students who qualify for advanced standing admission to the program will have the option of studying full-time and may complete the program in one year. The program also offers part-time study options to advanced standing students to complete the program in two years, or regular standing students to complete in three years.
“One of the many draws to this collaboration between our two universities is our approach to continuing education opportunities,” said WVU President Gordon Gee. “Fit and flexibility are key, and this new master’s degree program is a wonderful example of our commitment to helping students around the Mountain State launch careers doing what they love.”
Students enrolled in the full-time advanced standing program take all required day classes two days per week on the WVSU campus in Institute. Some courses are offered online. Part-time students take two evening classes at the WVU Charleston campus, located in Kanawha City. Students have the option of taking some elective courses at either campus or online.
The Collaborative MSW degree program is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.
The first group of students will begin classes in August 2016 and admission applications will begin being accepted March 1, 2016.
Financial support is available for students who qualify.
