West Virginia State University (WVSU) announced the receipt of a $125,000 gift from The Maier Foundation, Inc. This financial contribution will further endow a scholarship fund, established in 2013, that provides financial assistance for West Virginia students attending the University.
“This generous donation will further expand higher education access and opportunity for Yellow Jackets yet to come,” said West Virginia State University President Brian O. Hemphill. “On behalf of the State family, I offer my sincere appreciation to the Maier Foundation for their commitment to investing in the future economic prosperity of the Kanawha Valley, state and region by providing the gift of a more affordable, quality education to West Virginia State University students.”
The donation brings the total endowment of the Allan L. McVey Scholarship Fund, named in honor of a WVSU alumnus, to $200,000.
“The primary focus of the Maier Foundation is to further higher education in West Virginia,” said Maier Foundation President Brad Rowe. “Through supporting programs like the Allan L. McVey Scholarship Fund, the Foundation is fulfilling its mission by enabling more West Virginians to be able to attend college.”
McVey was the first member of his family to attend college and credits WVSU professors and scholarship assistance he received in positively impacting his education. Currently Vice President of BB&T Carson Insurance Services, McVey has actively advocated on behalf of his alma mater. He has served as Chair of the WVSU Foundation Board of Directors as well as a member of the Black & Gold Gala Development Committee, a member of the Vision 2020 Strategic Planning Committee and a member of the Campaign for WVSU Steering Committee.
“I am very thankful to the Maier Foundation and their Board of Directors, who have been very supportive of a number of schools here in West Virginia and felt it was time to provide this assistance for students attending West Virginia State,” said McVey. “This gift exercises what I have always believed: one should give back to the people and organizations that helped an individual to succeed. That is what this does for West Virginia State University, the Maier Foundation and for me individually.”
The Maier Foundation, Inc. is a private, non-profit, charitable corporation located in Charleston. Philanthropist William J. Maier, Jr. established the Foundation in 1958.
