Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin announced the appointment of Scott Rotruck to the West Virginia Board of Education on March 4, filling the vacancy created by the resignation of Wade Linger. The appointment is effective immediately.
“Scott possesses a wealth of knowledge from industries fundamental to our state’s economic growth and ongoing development,” Gov. Tomblin said. “His years of experience in the energy and transportation industries bring an important perspective to the Board of Education, and I’m confident he will help prepare our students for the jobs of today and tomorrow.”
A graduate of West Virginia University with a master’s in business administration from Frostburg State University, Rotruck has more than 30 years of experience in the energy and railroad industries with companies such as Chesapeake Energy, Anker Energy, CONSOL, CSX Corporation and Norfolk Southern Corporation.
“It’s an honor to be appointed, and I take the state’s obligation to provide a thorough and efficient education very seriously. It’s not only a requirement, it is critical to our state’s economic development,” Rotruck said. “Education is the great equalizer, and I want to make sure our young people get a solid foundation and are prepared to continue into vocational training, a community or technical college or a four-year university.”
Rotruck previously served as economic development director and senior advisor to the president at West Virginia University, where he taught a course in entrepreneurship at the university’s College of Business and Economics. He also is a member of the board of directors for The Education Alliance.
Rotruck currently serves as the director of energy & transportation services at Spilman Thomas and Battle, PLLC, where he serves as part of Spilman’s Government Relations Group, Energy Group and Shale Gas Practice Group.
