The Scarborough Society of Shepherd University will celebrate its 10th anniversary on Thursday, August 23 with a public reception and open house.  The event will recognize the society’s partnership with the Scarborough Library staff and their commitment to developing information technology and resources for Shepherd students, faculty, and the surrounding community over the past decade. The event, which is free of charge and open to the public, will take place at 6 p.m. with exhibits throughout the library. The Scarborough Society’s annual meeting will follow at 7 p.m. in the Reading Room of the library.

The commemorative reception and open house will showcase the library’s newest equipment and resources, funded in part by the Scarborough Society. Highlights will include the unveiling of the Center for Teaching and Learning’s new EduTech Center, providing a training lab area that students, faculty, and future teachers may utilize to learn how to use innovative technologies in a classroom setting. Also on display will be the new ScanPro 2000, which allows for the digitalization of the library’s collections, along with a new collaborative lab with additional computers and redesigned workspaces, and four new 42-inch screen LCD monitors in the third-floor group study rooms.

Inspired by the Scarborough Library’s magnificent addition and restoration in 2001, the Scarborough Society was formed in 2002 to support and strengthen the Shepherd University library system. Over the past 10 years, the society has raised more than $300,000 for the library, including $100,000 for two long-term endowments. The organization also sponsors popular community outreach endeavors, including a free art and lecture series featuring a diverse array of cultural and academic speakers and topics, an annual bus trip to regional places of interest, and a partnership with the Shepherdstown Film Society that allows for the showing of free films in Reynolds Hall for Shepherd students, faculty, and Shepherdstown residents.

The annual Scarborough Gala is the organization’s major social and fundraising event. Always a highlight of the summer, this literary-themed evening of dinner and dancing is a favorite among Scarborough members and their guests.

Membership in the Scarborough Society is open to all interested supporters of the Scarborough Library.
