The Concord University Veterans Committee is planning a weeklong observance in honor of Veterans Day. A variety of events and activities are scheduled during Nov. 5-9, 2018.
Beginning on Monday, Nov. 5 and continuing throughout the week, a Missing Man Table will be set up in the Libby Alvis Dining Hall. Flags representing the five service branches of the United States Armed Forces will be part of the display with a different flag being posted each day.
At 11 a.m. on Nov. 5, the Mercer County Veterans Honor Guard will place a wreath at the veterans memorial in front of Marsh Hall during a brief ceremony. The community is invited to attend. Also on Nov. 5, thank you cards signed by members of the campus community will be delivered to Concord’s Veterans Lounge in Room 245 of the Rahall Technology Center. The “thank you for your service” cards will be collected the previous week.
Concord’s student veterans will be honored on Tuesday, Nov. 6 with a complimentary lunch provided by Aramark in the dining hall. Additionally, the parking lot in front of the Student Center will be reserved that day for the University’s student veterans.
Concord University Veterans Upward Bound is hosting an open house picnic in the Athens Town Park on Wednesday, Nov. 7 from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. CU student veterans, along with veterans from Athens and surrounding communities, are invited to attend at no charge. In the event of inclement weather, the meal will be moved to the Student Center Ballroom at Concord. For additional information call 304-301-4152.
The Concord University Film Society will present “13 Hours – The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi” on Thursday, Nov. 8 in Room 237 of Marsh Hall beginning at 7 p.m. There is no admission charge and the general public is invited to join the Concord campus community in viewing the film.
Activities on Friday, Nov. 9 include participation in the National Roll Call from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Subway stage area of the Student Center. Names of West Virginia’s fallen service members will be continuously scrolling on a screen there for viewing.
A Veterans Day Ceremony will be held on Nov. 9 at 9 a.m. in the Wilkes Family Chapel in University Point. The community is invited to attend. Mr. George Williams will be the featured speaker.
Mr. Williams is a veteran having served with the U.S. Navy in Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He also spent time as an Engineering Technician for British Aerospace Engineering, where he assisted in the design of military grade advanced Radar systems and provided technical support to the Navy fleet worldwide.
As a student at Concord, George was instrumental in the creation of a successful veterans program that led to the University’s ranking as one of the most veteran friendly campuses in the nation. He also served as Concord’s first Veterans Advocate which is a student work study position.
George graduated from Concord in 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, summa cum laude. He continued his education by earning a master’s degree in Literature with distinction in 2012 from the University of Aberdeen in Aberdeen, Scotland.
Nearing completion of his PhD through the University of Dundee in Scotland, Mr. Williams is currently an Adjunct Instructor of English in Concord’s Department of Humanities.
The Veterans Committee will be also be selling American flags to be planted on the front lawn of Marsh Hall in honor and memory of veterans.
