Hendricks Award Presented, WVU School of Medicine Eastern Division

Jared Manwaring and Dr. James Carrier

On Friday, November 9, 2012, West Virginia University School of Medicine Eastern Division celebrated outstanding achievement of one of their students. Jared Manwaring received a new Eastern Division campus award named for the late and highly esteemed local general surgeon, D. Ewell Hendricks, MD. This award recognizes a fourth year medical student who demonstrates outstanding achievement in clinical surgical skills, as well as an exceptional commitment to community service in the Eastern Panhandle.

The award was presented to Manwaring by local surgeon and WVU School of Medicine Surgery Clerkship Director, James Carrier, MD. Upon presentation of the award, Dr. Carrier noted, “Dr. Hendricks was a dedicated surgeon who tirelessly served the Martinsburg community for many years. This award is presented to Jared K. Manwaring, who has demonstrated a high level of skill in the surgical arena and dedicated many hours of service to his community as a medical student.”

The WVU Health Sciences Center Eastern Division is located in Martinsburg, WV. WVU School of Medicine students begin medical school in Morgantown, but choose to finish their degree in the Eastern Panhandle, while completing rotations with community physicians and attending weekly lectures. After completing residency programs, many of these physicians return to the Eastern Panhandle to practice medicine. The WVU Health Sciences Center Eastern Division has been hosting third and fourth year medical students in the Eastern Panhandle since 2002.
