YMCA of Kanawha Valley will host “Summer in January” on Monday, January 21, 2013 from 9am-4pm. AmeriCorps volunteers will join the YMCA staff in Charleston to teach children about fitness and nutrition. The importance of keeping physically active all year long and learning about eating more fruits and vegetables will be the focus of the event. YMCA understands the importance of educating the community about how to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
“Summer in January” will be an activity packed day for children attending the YMCA full day out childcare program. Students will learn new sports, how to make healthy snacks and listen to inspirational speakers. Activities will include basketball, volleyball, soccer, tennis, youth fitness initiative (Y-FI), swimming, gardening and crafts. YMCA Youth counselor Brandon Perry will talk with the kids about how to incorporate exercise into a daily routine. Dr. Dan Foster will be on hand to speak about the importance of nutrition.
President John Giroir shares, “This event will be a fun time for the children and teach them how to make better food choices and how to keep moving. A healthy family can start with the influence of a child.”
