Boone Memorial Hospital would like to recognize the June 2013 Employee of the Month, Elizabeth “Libby” Brown. Libby is originally from West Virginia but moved to Tennessee for almost 12 years and eventually returned back to WV to be closer to her parents and family. She currently resides in Wharton in Boone County and has been on staff at BMH for approximately two years. She is a Registered Nurse Clinical Implementation Specialist.
As the Clinical Implementation Specialist Libby implements and provides continued support of the BMH computer documentation systems at both the Rural Health Clinic and BMH Medical Clinic as well as the hospital. She recently re-implemented CPOE for all in-house patients and continues to support medical providers and the nursing staff.
Computerized physician order entry (CPOE) (also sometimes referred to as Computerized Provider Order Entry) is a form of patient management software. It is a process of electronic entry of medical practitioner instructions for the treatment of patients (particularly hospitalized patients) under his or her care. These orders are communicated over a computer network to the medical staff or to the departments (pharmacy, laboratory, or radiology) responsible for fulfilling the order. CPOE decreases delay in order completion, reduces errors related to handwriting or transcription, allows order entry at the point of care or off-site, provides error-checking for duplicate or incorrect doses or tests, and simplifies inventory and posting of charges.
“We implemented CPOE just last month and right now we are preparing for the implementation of MEDHOST, our new EDIS system. The Go Live is scheduled for the 26th of this month. We have been very busy lately,” said Libby.
MEDHOST provides leading healthcare throughput and emergency department software. MEDHOST’s Emergency Department Information System (EDIS) will enhance patient care and safety, communication and processes in the BMH Emergency Department, the critical access hospital’s primary admit point for patients. In addition, the MEDHOST EDIS will help the hospital meet Meaningful Use criteria so it can be eligible to receive incentive payments under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
Both CPOE and MEDHOST EDIS have been huge undertakings but Libby has risen to the occasion and completed both tasks with poise and profressionalism.
“We are so fortunate Libby chose to join our BMH family. She started work and just fit right in with our goals and work ethic. Her previous experience, both in IT and Nursing, makes her a wonderful asset and resource. Many hospitals take a year or more to implement one of the projects like CPOE and EDIS yet she has completed them both back to back not to mention Clinic EMR, Meaningful Use, and more – just in the short time since she has worked here. Without Libby on our team we would have NEVER accomplished these goals as quickly as we have,” said Libby’s Supervisor, Susan Shreve, Executive Director Electronic Information.
Libby worked in the Emergency Room prior to becoming the Clinical Implementation Specialist. Her job duties included direct patient care.
Libby has an A.A.S. Degree in Nursing from North East State in Tennessee. She also has an RN License in WV as well as Tennessee and is certified in CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) and TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course).
“I have allowed my ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certifications to expire, but hope to renew those in the near future,” said Libby.
Co-workers rave about Libby’s professionalism and skills.
“Libby has been a huge asset to BMH. Her skills as a RN with an IT background has been tantamount in pushing our electronic health record into the 21st century. Aside from all her skills that she brings with her, Libby is an exceptional person. She is very professional, knowledgeable and personable. I really appreciate working along side her as a fellow nurse and co-worker,” said Teresa Meade, RN, BSN, Chief Nursing Officer.
Libby said the favorite part of her job is the challenge.
“I love the challenge this position offers me and I love the people I work with. However, I do miss patient care. I also love the people at BMH. It’s a family atmosphere here.”
When Libby isn’t busy working at BMH she enjoys photography, writing and spending time with her family.
“My family is my everything. God has blessed me with the best parents in the world! I don’t have children of my own, but I do have five nieces whom I love as my own and, so far, they have given me four ‘Greats’; Easton, 6, Kami Jo, 4, Emalyn, 2 ½, and Owen, 6 months. They each have added so much joy to my life,” said Libby.
Libby was very honored to receive this award.
“I was totally surprised; I truly never expected it. When Lois (HR Assistant) came to the door to get me and lead me to Mr. Mullin’s (CEO) office I thought for sure I had done something wrong. I was very happy to realize I had won Employee of the Month.”
Libby was honored with a designated parking space and free lunch for the entire month of June and a recognition plaque that is displayed in the front lobby at BMH.
Attending Physician at BMH, H.W. Lafferty, DO concluded by saying, “Libby has been such an asset. She is extremely skilled and very personable. I enjoy working with her immensely. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this award.”
