HSC INDUSTRIAL’s Electrical Engineering & Contracting group was just one of the many Beckley, West Virginia companies who were awarded project contracts for the 2013 Boy Scouts of America (BSA) National Jamboree at the new Summit Bechtel Reserve. HSC was contracted by the general contractor, Swope Construction Company to provide installation of the electrical, fire, data, security, lighting and controls systems for the BSA Sustainability Treehouse.
Tami Price served as HSC’s Project Manager and discussed challenges and opportunities of the project. “The project was on an aggressive timeline with an average of six sub-contracting companies on-site at any given time. Much of the work was completed throughout inclement weather conditions and workers had to rotate shifts in order for the jobsite to accommodate the project schedule. Despite the challenges it was a great honor for HSC to have been given the opportunity to work on such a unique project. The Sustainability Treehouse will offer Boy Scouts and visitors interactive learning opportunities and hours of fun experiences for future generations, many years to come.”
Through the use of photovoltaic panels, wind turbines and geothermal energy, the Treehouse was designed to generate as much energy as it uses. The structure also captures and treats water (wastewater and rainwater) for an overall “net zero” facility.
HSC’s project management and electrical involvement included the installation of conduit, wire, switchgear, lighting, grounding, data, fire and security systems. HSC also sub-contracted wind turbine installation to Wind Turbines of Ohio, LLC and solar panel work to Dovetail Solar and Wind.
A key theme of the 2013 Jamboree was “from leadership to sustainability.”
The Sustainability Treehouse is a project related to the Boy Scouts of America “leadership in conservation” efforts and Scouting’s commitment to sustainability. The Treehouse is a self-contained structure designed to demonstrate sustainable practices, where visitors can witness examples of sustainable stewardship in nature.
The colossal structure stands 126 feet tall and features 4,000 square feet of interactive exhibits. The Treehouse will be a permanent exhibit at the Summit in showcasing sustainable design in operation.
