The second season of West Virginia State University’s (WVSU) Creators Program workshop series will kick off with the West Virginia Film Office’s “Business of Film – Working with the Film Office” at the WVSU Economic Development Center (EDC) Saturday, Sept. 7, from 1 to 4 p.m.
Participants in the free workshop will learn how the Film Office can provide assistance with various film projects, as well as how to support the Film Office’s efforts across the state. Topics will include:
- The role of the Film Office and how to use its services
- How to find production work in the state
- An overview of registering with the online Crew and Vendor Directory
- How to get connected with others working in the industry
- Overview of proper planning for a production
- How to use the online Locations Library
- Review of permit processes for filming on public properties
- Overview of the tax credit program
Attendees will receive a Certificate of Participation that will count as one unit toward a Creators Certificate, awarded after the completion of 20 workshop units. Other workshops scheduled for the fall include 10 Commandments for Creative Success (Sept. 24), Independent Publishing (Oct. 19), Producing 101 (Nov. 2) and Composing for New Media 101 (Nov. 16).
The Creators Program launched last year as a series of community workshops focusing on skills and knowledge essential to creating for mass media and art. WVSU partners with the Arts Council of Kanawha Valley and the West Virginia Film Office on the series.
“The Creators Program brings a diverse group of talented people together,” says Bill Woodrum, associate dean for Extension at WVSU. “We have a wonderful group of instructors from government, education, and the private sector who are all interested in developing the creative culture in West Virginia.”
Workshops are designed for people of all skill levels, including students and others interested in expanding their creative endeavors.
“The Creators Program workshops cover all aspects of creating for mass media and art,” says Danny Boyd, a WVSU communications professor and artist in residence at the WVSU EDC. “These workshops provide education in shorter time frames than a traditional classroom while utilizing the expertise of area professionals and WVSU’s Communications and Media Studies department.”
