The West Virginia University Division of University Relations won four gold and two bronze awards from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, an organization that awards the best practices, programs and communications in advancement.
In addition, the Perley Isaac Reed School of Journalism received a silver award, West Virginia University Institute of Technology a bronze and the Integrated Marketing Communications online graduate program within the School of Journalism an honorable mention.
The CASE District II Accolades Awards program identifies and honors exceptional service across alumni relations, communications, design, development, grant writing, magazines, marketing, news writing, photography, portals, publications and Web platforms.
“These awards recognize not only the hard work, talent and creativity of UR staff but also the passion of these individuals and other creative professional involved at the University,” said Sharon Martin, vice president for University Relations. “Congratulations to all those who participated in the various projects and campaigns.”
The CASE District II Accolades Awards program awarded WVU University Relations gold awards for four projects:
- WVU: Boy Scout Jamboree (Promotional Items): With an influx of thousands of Boy Scouts to West Virginia, WVU created promotional items such as billboards, a website and participated in events. These promotional items not only welcomed Scouts, but encouraged learning.
- WVU Magazine: Innovation Issue – Dr. Larry Rhodes (Computer or Digital Enhanced Images): The Spring 2013 WVU Magazine focused on innovators at the University who are blazing unmarked paths to discovery. Dr. Larry Rhodes is a pediatric cardiologist who used new techniques to save the lives of children.
- About WVU Website (Web Site: Publications, Special Purpose): West Virginia University’s About WVU page gives prospective students a glimpse into what WVU is about. It features facts, rankings, achievements, history and how to get connected. Judges’ comments noted the compact overall style, mobile-friendly layout and easy navigation, among other features.
- Without Challenge, There Can Be No Mountaineers (General Institutional Relations): The 2012 National TV Spot video features Mountaineer Mascot John Kimble thriving on challenge to produce character, discovery and knowledge. In 30 seconds, WVU showcased our Mountaineer spirit for our inaugural season in the Big 12 Conference. Judges noted its fast-paced and focused messaging that depicts a positive and aspirant spirit, and it captures the audience’s attention through strong imagery.
The division also won two bronze awards:
- WVU’s Home Page (Web Site: Institutional Home Page): The WVU web site is the main landing page for all University-related information. It features links to all University programs, as well as a calendar of events, news and information for prospective students, faculty, staff, researchers and visitors.
- The Digital Story of WVU Graduation 2013: Why College Matters (Social Media): The 24,000 hour project is a multi-platform social media marketing and engagement campaign surrounding the 2013 May Commencement. It featured a number of students and how they spent a majority of their time in college. Judges noted the great use of graphics, multiple social media forms, good metrics and broad audience.
The Perley Isaac Reed School of Journalism also received a silver award in the “Web Site: Student Recruitment” category for their See What You Can Be website that highlights students and alumni in various career paths on a series of roles – rather than specific job titles.
The Integrated Marketing Communications online graduate program within the PI Reed School of Journalism received an honorable mention for its INTEGRATE conference, which explores the latest techniques and strategies in the field with faculty and industry professionals.
West Virginia University Institute of Technology won a bronze award in the “Student Recruitment: Packages” category.

The CASE awards are the most recent in a series of recent achievements by West Virginia University. In November, WVU University Relations won four platinum and one gold award from Marcom, an international competition that recognizes outstanding creative achievement by marketing and communication professionals.
CASE is a professional association for advancement professionals who work in alumni relations, communications, development, marketing and allied areas. Its membership includes more than 3,600 colleges and universities, primary and secondary schools and nonprofit organizations in 76 countries. District II serves more than 675 institutions in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Ontario, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and West Virginia.
