The Greater Morgantown Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) has been presented with the 2013 Community Living Initiatives Corporation (CLIC) Community Service Award for its efforts to attract seniors and retired tourists to the Greater Morgantown Area.
The GMCVB is charged with making Greater Morgantown the region’s prime destination for travelers through the recruitment of groups, events and activities that enhance the quality of life in the community.
Its support of retiree attractions, part of the CLIC mission, has made Morgantown the state’s premier retirement destination.
“The GMCVB staff and board of directors are proud to be recognized for our efforts to attract seniors and retired individuals to the Greater Morgantown area,” said Peggy Myers-Smith, GMCVB president and CEO. “Our area is an ideal destination for this market and we are constantly adding new attractions and events.”
CLIC, a 501(c)(3) community and economic development organization, focuses on community development issues including planning, housing, transportation, recreation, and other areas, as they relate to older adults in Morgantown and Monongalia County. Each year since 1992, CLIC has honored a local individual or organization that has made significant contributions to improving the quality of life for older adults.
“Organizations like the CVB are a valuable asset to our community,” said Jon B. Hunter, Chairman of the CLIC Board of Directors. “They provide a valuable resource for older adults who are interested in Morgantown as an ideal retirement destination. The CVB helps us demonstrate to potential retired residents that Morgantown has many layers–good health care, housing opportunities, services for a variety of needs, and more recreation activities than there are days in a week.”
Older adults represent more than 16% of West Virginia’s total population and will continue to grow as a market group over the next 20 years as Baby Boomers age into retirement.
