West Virginia State Park Hikes Scheduled During New River Gorge Wildflower Weekend, April 25–27, 2014

Some of West Virginia’s state parks will participate in the National Park Service’s 11th annual New River Gorge Wildflower Weekend, April 25-27, by scheduling several special hikes. All are free and the public is invited. Full program details are online at www.nps.gov/neri.

April 26, 2014

  • Take a Signs of Spring Walk at Little Beaver State Park starting at 3:30 p.m. at the park office. See spring in bloom on this leisurely 1.3 mile discovery walk throughout the park. Look for wildflowers, signs of animals and more. www.littlebeaverstatepark.com 304-763-2494

 

April 27, 2014

  • Babcock State Park will have a Spring Birding Walk beginning at 8 a.m. Meet at the Glade Creek Grist Mill for an hour-and-a-half birding walk. Stroll through the diverse habitats of Babcock in search of the region’s secretive beauties — birds. www.babcock.com  304-438-3004

 

  • Falls & Flowers: Nature of Brush Creek is Pipestem State Park’s weekend wildflower hike. Meet at the Pipestem Nature Center at 2 p.m. for a drive to Brush Creek Falls and a 3-mile spring walk. www.pipestemresort.com 304-466-1800

 

  • Hawks Nest Views & Beauties Walk begins at the older areas of Hawks Nest State Park for the 2-4 p.m. interpretative program. Explore the original section of the park built by the CCC, including the walkway to the main overlook and the forested loop trail.
