The 24th annual David S. Roth Memorial 5K will take place at Concord University Tuesday, May 6. Registration will begin at 5 p.m. in the Carter Center Lobby. The race will begin at 6:15 p.m.
The race is scheduled during the last week of classes to provide an enjoyable study-break activity and a healthy stress reliever.
The 3.1 mile race will begin at the CU track, circle the campus and loop through downtown Athens. The event is for both runners and walkers.
Those interested in participating can either pre-register or register on the day of the race. To pre-register, contact Tom Davis at tdavis@concord.edu / (304) 384-3298, or print off a 5K entry form at www.swvrrc.org/schedule.html. For those who pre-register by 4 p.m. on Monday, May 5th, the registration fee is $8 for students and $15 for others. For those who register on race day (May 6th), the registration fee is $10 for students and $20 for others.
Registration fees are donated to the David S. Roth Memorial Scholarship fund. Recently, the proceeds from the race have made it possible to increase the amount of the scholarship from $500 to $1000 per academic year.
The annual race was started in 1990 by Concord Biology Professor Roger Sheppard in honor of Professor David S. Roth, who taught English and journalism from 1969 until his death in 1986. Dr. David Roth was an avid Mountain Lions fan who supported CU athletics by serving as a statistician, reporter, and announcer at football games.
The 2014 Roth 5K logo has been designed by CU advertising/graphic design major Bridget Branick.
In support of the Roth 5K, the Concord University Student Government Association has generously provided funds for trophies and trophy mugs for winners in various categories, as well as T-shirts for race participants (guaranteed for the first 100 to pre-register and participate).
