WVU Eastern Division recently recognized the outstanding contributions of Health Sciences Technology Academy (HSTA) retiring employee, Don Coghlan. Mr. Coghlan served for eight years as both a mentor and supervisor to students in HSTA clubs in Morgan, Berkeley and Jefferson County high schools.
Founded in 1994, HSTA is a 9th– 12th grade math and science enrichment program for minority and underrepresented students and communities. It was created in West Virginia, for West Virginian’s to open doors, encourage students, and empower them. The goal of the program is to increase the number of underrepresented minority and rural community students who successfully pursue careers in the science and technology fields. In addition to being WV residents, HSTA participants have several requirements, including maintaining a minimum grade point average, required meeting attendance, completing a yearly science project, and a commitment to complete 75 hours community service. Students who successfully complete the program can receive tuition waivers for State college tuition.
During the time that Mr. Coghlan led the Eastern Panhandle HSTA program, more than 89 HSTA participant students graduated from high school and entered college – many of whom were the first in their families to attend college.
Konrad C. Nau, MD, WVU Eastern Division Dean, presented the award stating, “Don’s dedication to his students has been remarkable. He not only has made a difference in our Health Sciences Center community outreach, he has more importantly made a difference in the lives of these students. He will be missed. ”
