Canaan Valley Ski Area opened today with eight trails including the popular 1 ¼-mile Timber Trail. The ski area will open with a 12-inch to 24-inch base and packed powder.
Celebrating its 45th anniversary this year, the resort has made several major enhancements to its snowmaking. The ski area doubled its snowmaking capacity with the additions of snow guns and compressors, added new ski and snowboard rental equipment as well as new ice skates and cross country skis, created a new “out-of-bounds” cross country ski trail on the back side of the ski hill.
The resort has been making snow non-stop for several days in anticipation of a banner opening day. Skiers can check out current conditions by viewing the resort’s webcam.
In addition to Timber Trail, the intermediate trail Valley Vista and advanced trail Face are open to mid-station. Other green trails open today include Lower Timber Run, Sissy Schuss, Bunny Buster, Cutback and Critters Crawl, the resort’s teaching area. Both A quad chairlift and B triple chairlift are open along with the Critters Crawl magic carpet.
“We have been looking forward to this day for months, and we can’t wait to welcome our regular ski guests and new visitors to the region’s finest ski area,” said Steve Drumheller, general manager of Canaan Valley Resort. “From the moment we open, the ski area will have something for everyone who wants to experience some early-season skiing.”
Drumheller also noted that the resort is already making snow and building up the base on Gravity, the ski area’s most advanced run as well as Upper Canaan Curve, an intermediate run and (Lower, mid, upper) Spruce, an advance run, with the goal of having these runs open by Dec. 17. The resort’s ice skating rink is also open.
Canaan Valley Resort is offering a variety of promotions and packages at the ski area and at the 160-room lodge. The most popular skiers package is the Ski and Stay Package, which includes lodging in a mountain-view double queen room, breakfast, lift ticket and privileges at the resort’s Beech Club. Prices vary throughout the season. During the first week of the season, from Dec. 10-17, rates are as low as $96 per person for a midweek visit.
