Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin today announced West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Joe Miller will retire Jan. 15, 2013. Following Miller’s retirement, Deputy Commissioner Steven Dale will assume the role of Acting Commissioner.
“I wish Joe the best in his upcoming, and much deserved, retirement from public service,” Gov. Tomblin said. “During his years as commissioner, Joe has remained dedicated to improving technology at the division in order to enhance customer service. I’m grateful for his service and commitment to West Virginians.”
Miller has served as commissioner since 2009 and previously held the position from 1997 to 2001. Under his leadership, the Division of Motor Vehicles modernized its licensing and vehicle systems, created the driver’s license Veteran’s designation, and most recently, successfully implemented the federal secure licensing system known as REAL ID.
Steven Dale has been with the DMV for over 30 years and has served in a variety of roles, including management positions in Driver Services, Vehicle Services, and Management Services. He earned Bachelor and Master’s degrees from Marshall University, and a Master’s Degree from West Virginia University. In his most recent position, Dale was responsible for DMV’s Legislative Program.
