Harpers Ferry National Historical Park is one of 20 finalists competing for a spot as Best Historic Southern Attraction in the USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice contest. The top 20 attractions were compiled by a panel of travel journalists and the final 10 will be chosen by public vote.
“I’m thrilled Wild, Wonderful West Virginia continues to be recognized for its outstanding attractions,” Commissioner of Tourism Amy Shuler Goodwin said. “From fabulous and funky to crazy and cool, visitors of all ages can enjoy the Mountain State’s truly authentic experiences.”
Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, located at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, was established in 1963. It includes the town of Harpers Ferry, the scene of John Brown’s raid – viewed by many historians as the spark that ignited the Civil War. Nearly 500,000 people visit the park every year to experience its cultural and recreational attractions.
