Natural disasters and wars are the cause of untold suffering and misery around the world. With the online charity auction “Heal the World through Art” LUMAS would like to set an example and help those people in lifethreatening circumstances. In close cooperation with artnet auctions, LUMAS is auctioning 16 sold out pieces from the LUMAS portfolio and donating 100% of the proceeds to three established and trusted charity organizations to ease the suffering caused by hurricane “Sandy” (American Red Cross), the civil war in Syria (UNICEF) and the war in the Nuba Mountains in Sudan (Cap Anamour).
The Charity Auction will take place between November 21 – 28, 2012 on the artnet auction site: http://www.artnet.com/auctions/lumas-charity-sale. 16 of the most sought after, sold-out works from the LUMAS portfolio will be auctioned, including works by Joseph Beuys, Wolfgang Joop, Michel Comte and Robert Lebeck. American Red Cross
This autumn, Hurricane Sandy destroyed 200,000 homes in Cuba, Haiti and the USA. More than 185 people lost their lives in the devastating storm, others lost everything. In particular, the barrier islands have suffered greatly from the catastrophe: harvests and food storage were completely destroyed. Cholera is spreading through the water and local health facilities are reporting large increases in illness. The aid organization American Red Cross is helping the hurricane’s victims by providing emergency aid; they are building emergency shelter, providing warm clothes, food and necessary medicines. After the first phase of emergency aid, the American Red Cross will help with long-term and sustainable rebuilding of the devastated areas and settlements.
Cap Anamur – Deutsche Not-Ärzte e.V.
With 400,000 people, the Nuba is the largest non-Arab group in the northern part of Sudan, but identify with the south and want nothing more than independence and to live in peace. But their future is uncertain because the government is waging a brutal war on the Nuba people. Almost all have been forced out of their homes; many villages are deserted, completely destroyed or burnt to the ground, overcrowded refugee camps now provide the only shelter. Many of the Nuba, especially the children, have been traumatized by the horrors of war. Cap Anamur is working to provide emergency medical aid to them. After the rebuilding of the clinic in Lwere, around 60 inpatients and 200 outpatients are now being cared for every day. The hospital treats weak and malnourished children and cares for patients injured by shrapnel.
UNICEF
More than 2.5 million have had their lives impacted by the civil war in Syria, half of which are children. Hundreds of thousands of families are living in emergency shelters in Syria or in refugee camps and communities in Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and Iraq. The onset of cold weather brings new problems to the families. The children, weakened by civil war and flight, are now under threat from illnesses such as pneumonia and hypothermia. They urgently need waterproof shelter, warm clothes and blankets. This means over 600,000 children and young people need protection from the oncoming winter in their refugee camps and emergency shelters. While efforts to secure a ceasefire suffer constant setbacks, UNICEF has started a winter program for the affected children. Aid workers provide the refugees with winter clothes, blankets, mattresses, pots and pans, hygiene packets and desperately needed medicine.
