Kids and their families are the focus of outdoor explorations Saturday, May 21, at Cacapon Resort State Park near Berkeley Springs in Morgan County. “Kids to Parks Day” activities will include hikes, nature studies and crafts.
“We focus on the outdoors in our parks because many children don’t have that opportunity elsewhere,” said Renee Fincham, Cacapon Resort State Park naturalist, who is organizing the kid-friendly events. “Introducing children and adults to something in nature is rewarding for everyone.”
Saturday, May 21, will be part of the nationwide “Kids to Parks Day” initiative to encourage youth and families to enjoy the outdoors. Activities include a nature walk, followed by programs and crafts at the Nature Center focusing on native turtle species. Memorial Day weekend, May 28-30, will feature programs focusing on insects and their effects on plants, and hikes that will explore history and woodpeckers.
The Thomas Ambrose Nature Center will be open at various times with taxidermy mount displays of 19 birds, 15 mammals and 27 fish. Hands-on activities will include animal tracks and signs, silhouettes of birds, animal skulls, geology and Native America artifacts.
