The MedExpress Girls on the Run of North Central West Virginia 5K will be held Saturday, May 26, 2018, at 10 a.m. at the West Virginia University (WVU) Evansdale Campus in Morgantown.
Girls on the Run is a physical-activity-based positive youth development program that prepares 3rd to 8th grade girls for a 5K event along with helping them develop key life skills. The program takes place in all 50 states and the District of Columbia and has been inspiring girls to recognize their limitless potential for over 20 years. This season, there are 659 girls enrolled in the following North Central West Virginia counties: Barbour, Harrison, Marion, Monongalia, Preston and Wetzel.
Volunteer-led teams meet twice a week throughout the season and participate in lessons that prepare the girls for a 5K event, foster the girls’ confidence, help them build connections with their peers and encourage meaningful contribution to their community through a service project. Girls on the Run incorporates lessons designed to build life skills, such as an appreciation of one’s inner qualities.
The MedExpress Girls on the Run 5K is a noncompetitive event that provides girls with a goal to work toward and shows them that the finish line is just the beginning when it comes to going after their dreams. Girls on the Run hosts the largest 5K series in the United States by number of events with over 330 across the country last year. Last season’s MedExpress North Central WV 5K event had 1,100 participants, including girls in the program, their running buddies and other community members. The North Central WV area 5K event is open to the public. Online registration is $25 through May 18 and will be $30 on the event day.
For the 2018-19 seasons, Girls on the Run of North Central WV has partnered with neighborhood health care provider MedExpress as the title sponsor and choice urgent care for the program.
“It’s our privilege to support Girls on the Run and create opportunities for young girls to make a positive impact on their health and well-being,” said Danin Greusel, MedExpress Community Involvement & Growth Manager.
Packet pick up will be available Friday, May 25, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at HealthWorks Rehab & Fitness on Maple Drive in Morgantown. The MedExpress Girls on the Run 5K event will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 26, at the WVU Student Recreation Center, with registration, packet pick-up and event day festivities beginning at 8 a.m. For more information, including how to register or volunteer, visit www.gotrncwv.org.
