Meshea L. Poore of the Poore Law Office in Charleston, West Virginia, and a former member of the West Virginia House of Delegates, will be the keynote speaker at Marshall University’s Women of Color Awards Celebration Tuesday, March 31.

The program, which is free to the public, begins at noon in the Don Morris Room of the Memorial Student Center on MU’s Huntington campus. Vendors and displays will be set up throughout the day in the lobby of the student center.

This year’s theme is “Inspiring Change.” Women of Color awards will be presented and a luncheon buffet will follow.

The Women of Color Awards Celebration is an annual event sponsored by Marshall University’s Office of Intercultural Affairs, the Center for African American Students, MU Women’s Center and MU Residence Services.

Each year three people (one Marshall employee, one student and one Cabell County resident) are selected to be honored for their contributions towards community and/or university service and promoting multicultural understanding and gender equity.

Poore represented District 37 in the House of Delegates from 2010 to 2014. She did not seek reelection in 2014. She was born in Charleston, West Virginia, and graduated from Capital High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Howard University in Washington, D.C., and a Juris Doctor degree from Southern University Law Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Poore started working as a public defender in Kanawha County in 2004. In 2009, she started her own law practice. On Jan. 10, 2010, Poore was sworn in to the West Virginia House of Delegates after being appointed by Governor Joe Manchin, to fill a vacancy of the seat.
