Drive By Truckers – One of the most well-respected alternative country-rock acts of the 2000s, Athens, GA’s Drive By Truckers heralded a new era of Southern rock. Led by frontman Patterson Hood (son of famed Muscle Shoals bassist David Hood) with a rotating cast of Georgia and Alabama natives, the band released its debut in 1998. It’s worth noting (at least to WV residents), that during the ‘70s, Hood spent a considerable amount of time in Charleston visiting his grandparents. Influenced by Lynyrd Skynyrd and Neil Young, Drive By Truckers hallmark is a rough ‘n’ ready, three-guitar attack. Releases like the live “Alabama Ass Whuppin’” and 2001’s “The Southern Rock Opera” cemented – and furthered – the group’s considerable reputation and made them regulars on the festival circuit. The band was also tapped to back soul legend Bettye LaVette on her CD “Scene of the Crime.” In addition to 2008’s “Brighter than Creation’s Dark,” DBT backed Booker T. Jones on his first release in two decades “Potato Hole.” There was a flurry of band and Hood solo releases between 2009 and 2013. The group’s latest – and 12th – release is titled “English Oceans,” and features a baker’s dozen songs written by Hood and guitarist Mike Cooley.
Mary Gauthier – Alt-country singer/songwriter Mary Gauthier (“Go-Shay”) exploded onto the scene in 1999 – at age 35 – following the release of “Drag Queens in Limousines” which earned four stars in “Rolling Stone.” Gauthier writes what she knows: She was put up for adoption by her birth mother and, at 15, she stole a car from her adopted parents and hit the road, eventually spending her 18th birthday in a Kansas jail. After attending culinary school, Gauthier opened the successful Dixie Kitchen restaurant in Boston’s Back Bay. With eight CDs under her belt, Gauthier continues to amass a long list of accolades ranging from “Emerging Artist of the Year” at Nashville’s American Awards to 2002’s “Best Singer/Songwriter Album Of The Year” by “No Depression.” Her CDs have appeared on a score of year-end “Best Of” lists including “The New York Times,” “The Los Angeles Times,” “The Chicago Tribune,” and “Billboard Magazine.” Her recordings have been produced by the Cowboy Junkies’ Michael Timmins, former Lucinda Williams guitarist Gurf Morlix, and Joe Henry. Her new release, “Trouble and Love,” features cameos by guitarist Guthrie Trapp, keyboardist Jimmy Wallace, bassist Viktor Krauss, drummer Lynn Williams and singers Beth Nielsen Chapman, Ashley Cleveland and Darrell Scott, Siobhan Kennedy and The McCrary Sisters.
The Barr Brothers – After spending most of the ‘90s touring the U.S. with the trio The Slip, brothers Andrew and Brad Barr relocated to Montreal and joined forces with classically trained, experimental harpist Sarah Page, and multi-instrumentalist Andres Vial. Since the release of its self-titled debut in 2012, the band has played on the rim of the Grand Canyon, performed on the “Late Show With David Letterman,” opened for Emmylou Harris, was nominated for a Juno award, and played festivals from Iceland to Portland. The group’s most recent release is titled “Sleeping Operator.”
Allison Moorer – After paying her dues as a struggling songwriter and back-up vocalist, Allison Moorer got her break when both she and her song “A Soft Place To Fall” were featured in the film “The Horse Whisperer.” Her writing has been informed by the murder-suicide of her parents (a tragedy documented in her song “Cold, Cold Earth”); scenes from the beginning, middle, and end of two marriages; and, most recently, the delight in the birth of her son John Henry’s birth – and the subsequent fear, fury and guilt stirred up by his autism (which she writes about in the song “Mama Let the Wolf In”). In 2003, Moorer issued the live “Show,” which featured her sister Shelby Lynne and Kid Rock. Her latest release, “Down to Believing,” chronicles the love and anguish that consumed her after the demise of her second marriage.
Carlos Nunez – Galician multi-instrumentalist Carlos Núñez is the world’s premier player of the gaita, the bagpipes of Galicia, Spain’s northwest region known for its brand of vibrant, Celtic traditional music. Galicia’s foremost musical ambassador, Nunez celebrates the spirit of his native music – which dates back to the 11th Century – while expanding its boundaries. In 1994, Nunez made his U.S. debut at Carnegie Hall performing with The Chieftains, and has since toured and recorded several times with the band. Nunez’s instrumental arsenal also includes the ocarina, assorted whistles, Scottish highland pipes, uilleann (Irish) pipes, bombarde (a kind of Breton oboe), biniou koz (Breton bagpipes), and pastoral pipes (18th-century precursor of the uilleann pipes). His latest CD, “Inter-Celtic,” features cameos by button accordionist Sharon Shannon, bouzouki-bodhrán player Dónal Lunny, Ry Cooder and Irish allstars Altan. A writer for The Los Angeles Times wrote, “if it’s possible to become a pop star playing traditional music on bagpipes and recorder, Núñez could be the man.”
