Working at the family business as a teenager inspired Norman Mosrie to take an accounting class in high school to better understand the financial aspect of owning a small company. Mosrie’s father, who immigrated to the U.S. from Lebanon, established Mosrie’s Fashion Shop in 1924.

“Helping run the family store as a teenager, I was intrigued by the feeling of accomplishment of balancing the books,” says Mosrie. “Mom utilized a local public accountant to help her with more complex accounting matters and to file her tax returns, so I was inspired to learn more about accounting. I took an accounting class in high school and decided this was a good career choice for me. And the rest, as they say, is history.”

Upon graduating from Marshall University in 1985, Mosrie’s dream was to secure a position with one of the Big Eight international accounting firms. Though he interviewed for a few out-of-state positions, he decided to remain in the Mountain State to help take care of his mother. Mosrie accepted a position at Ernst & Whinney in Charleston. Throughout his professional career, he has experienced change in the industry and learned to adapt.

“Over the next several years, things changed rapidly in the profession with the introduction of personal computers and SuperCalc,” he recalls. “Then the typewriter was replaced with word processors. The key lesson I learned early on was that the world is constantly changing, and we have to be prepared to adapt to the change to continue to be successful in business. Fast forward to modern day, and we had to quickly change our client service delivery model to complete our audits and provide other services virtually in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Today, Mosrie is the partner-in-charge of assurance services for Dixon Hughes Goodman (DHG) Healthcare, which is part of DHG’s national health care practice that serves more than 1,300 health care clients.

“In addition to hospitals, we serve the full continuum of care, including physician practices, nursing homes, hospice, home health and various private-equity backed health care ventures,” he says. “Lenders and other stakeholders in the global markets need to trust the quality of the information they receive to make key decisions, which is why assurance services has such a vital role. Our team offers an independent and objective view in providing assurance on company financial statements and in meeting stakeholder needs.”

Along with his current role, Mosrie serves as the chair for the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants Healthcare Expert Panel and the Healthcare Financial Management Association Principles and Practices Board.

He also acts as a mentor and coach to his team, which he says is an important part of his responsibility as a partner. Additionally, Mosrie gives back to his community personally and professionally. He serves as a special review committee member for the Government Finance Officers Association, a board member for the Marshall University Foundation and Lewis College of Business advisory board and has been actively involved in supporting initiatives like the United Way Day of Caring, American Red Cross flood relief and Goodwill’s Dress for Success alongside his coworkers.

“Throughout my career, I have been passionate about giving back and supporting the accounting profession, our communities and those less fortunate than me,” he says. “Corporate citizenship is a part of the DHG culture. Our marquee community event for many years was Count the Cans to collect food for the hungry. We challenged our offices across the country to collect canned goods, and we had a competition among the interns across the country to build creative structures from the cans collected.”

Having lived in the Mountain State his whole life, Mosrie hopes to be part of continued efforts to make it an even greater place to live and work.

“I spend a significant amount of time serving clients out of state,” he says. “I want to work with other business leaders to help spur economic development in West Virginia to not only attract new businesses but also promote expansion of existing businesses. This is crucial for recruiting and retaining top talent.”
