On Tuesday, December 6, 2016, Northwestern Mutual staff and financial representatives will fill personalized backpacks with Christmas gifts for teenage children in the West Virginia foster care system. The Backpack Project, Inc. packing party will take place at Northwestern Mutual (920 Quarrier Street, Charleston, WV) beginning at 12:00 p.m.

Managing Partner of Northwestern Mutual in West Virginia, Wesley Richardson CFP®, CLU®, and his wife Martha Richardson coordinate with local Departments of Health and Human Resources offices and Daymark, Inc. to provide backpacks filled with gifts for 161 teenagers in the West Virginia foster care system.

“The goal of The Backpack Project, Inc. is to focus on children in our community that are in a tough place. This is just one way to show these children and teenagers that they are loved and cared for,” Wesley Richardson said.

The Backpack Project, Inc. is sponsored by financial representatives and staff of Northwestern Mutual throughout West Virginia. The monogrammed L.L. Bean backpacks are filled with Amazon Fire tablets, blankets, a pair of TOM’s shoes, toys and games, watch, and other items.

“It’s so great to see our Northwestern Mutual West Virginia team come together and see how big of an impact we can make not only with financial planning but with community involvement,” Wesley Richardson said.

Wesley and Martha created The Backpack Project, Inc. after they became aware of this need in West Virginia. The Northwestern Mutual West Virginia agency has raised over $30,000 in 2016 to provide the backpacks and all the gifts inside the backpack.
