Ohio Valley University has expanded its College Matters course thanks to funding contributed by the Wood County Commission.
The commissioners voted in September to contribute $4,297 to the College Matters program, which helps teens gain the skills and knowledge needed for college and a career. The classes are offered through the college and are open to the general public. The goal is to provide skills, practice for the ACT, and expose students to campus life.
The money has already been put to use to equip a new College Matters classroom. The room has been painted and a projector, laptop, and mount have been installed. Mimio equipment and room darkening shades are to be installed. The project is expected to be completed by early December.
OVU had a chance to show its appreciation to the commission recently when Commissioner Blair Couch spoke to the students at OVU. Dr. Jim Bullock, OVU vice president for academic affairs, presented Couch with a certificate of appreciation for the Wood County Commission and its support of the College Matters course.
“The funding from the commission enables us to continue to expand and improve the College Matters initiative to provide a bridge for underprepared and at-risk students to prepare to fulfill a dream of matriculation that otherwise was beyond their reach,” Dr. Bullock said.
