Rotary Club of Martinsburg names scholarship winners

Two Spring Mills High School students are recipients of the Rotary Club of Martinsburg’s annual Rotary Service scholarships to outstanding students.

Brandon Dew is our first place Rotary Service Scholarship recipient from Spring Mills High School. He will receive $1,000 to pursue his career in Health and Wellness and/or Education at Shepherd University. Brandon’s 4.4 GPA is impressive and is a testimony to the discipline that will be required during his college career. He has been a member and held leadership roles in the Math Cub and has been a member of the Quill and Scroll and MuAlpha Theta honor societies; a member of Inspire WV to vote, Science Club, Science National Honor Society; Creative Writing Club, Student Government Association, STEM and Editor for LUCID Literary Magazine.

Brandon also served in leadership roles in the Rotary Interact Club. His service through the club includes, a Hygiene drive for the Women and Children’s Shelter, canned food drive, Haiti for Heifers fundraiser, Student Exchange Program, Red Sand Project, the Guatemala Well Filtration project and he helped with crafts at the Rotary Santa Breakfast.

Brandon has also helped with the Kidz Power Pac program, the Marlowe and SMP Science Night, Thanksgiving Dinner Food Basket Drive, the Fall Festival at Spring Mills, Human Trafficking Awareness Campaign, school blood drive and the Melanoma Prevention campaign.

Brandon states, “ For me, Rotary Interact has changed me and made me into the person I am, right now, today. I’ve become more social, more involved, and most importantly, more kind and much much more selfless.”

Sydny Schoppert, from Spring Mills High School, will receive a $600 Rotary Service Scholarship to pursue her studies in the field of Public Recreation and Park Administration at Shepherd University.

With a GPA of 4.5, Sydny is equipped with the skills to be successful in college.

She was active in school activities including leadership positions in the Rotary Interact Club; the captain of the Varsity Soccer team; and member of the Student Government Club.

Her service projects included serving at the Pancakes for Polio breakfast; packing meals for the Kidz Power Pac program and stuffing stockings for a local church to distribute to children in need.

Sydny states, “Rotary Interact may be singlehandedly the most useful club at any school that prepares high school students to successfully become a good member of their community and give them resources to help those in need.”
