Run for Heroes combines the challenges of a 5K race with the opportunity to help student veterans at Concord University. The run will be held Saturday, Oct. 4 at Callaghan Stadium on the Athens campus. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the race begins at 10 a.m.
The event will benefit the Veteran’s Support Fund at Concord University and is sponsored by WVCU, Concord’s radio station.
Student veterans are often non-traditional, juggling a family life, work and school. The Veteran’s Support Fund bridges the gap between the costs of college for these individuals, from textbooks to school supplies.
“Our nation supports us overseas. Our community supports us at home,” John Marcum, Concord University veterans liaison, said.
Marcum said he and the other student veterans at Concord appreciate the community’s support for events like Run for Heroes.
Organizers are creating a challenging, yet fun, atmosphere for the race. The challenges of the course honor the hard work and sacrifices endured by the United States military. Runners are encouraged to wear a costume of their favorite super hero to honor the heroic efforts of service men and women. The best costume along with race winners will win medals and prizes.
The race will begin and end at Callaghan Stadium and will travel across Concord’s campus and into Athens. To see a map of the course and for other details visit: http://www.concord.edu/runforheroes
An awards ceremony will be held following the race. Participants in the 5K will be treated to a complimentary barbecue meal. Entertainment will be provided by One Eyed Jack, a southern West Virginia blues band.
Cost to enter the race is $20 for Concord students, faculty and staff and the general public. Children ages five and under may participate for $15. Individuals registering by Sept. 29 will receive the discounted entry fee of $15 and will be guaranteed to receive a T-shirt.
