The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is excited to participate in a celebration, hosted by the Small Business Development Center (SBDC), where Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito will honor the 2013 SBA Family-Owned Small Business of the Year.  The event takes place Friday, July 26, 2013 at 11:30 a.m. at Capon Springs and Farms.  The community is invited to join in a presentation as we honor the deserving company.

Capon Springs and Farms, a camp-like resort catering to family gatherings, retreats and getaways,  is located on 4700 acres of green, forested mountain in Hampshire County and has been a family-owned business since 1932.  The business is managed primarily by family members from the third generation, and promotes traditions where family and friends enjoy home cooked meals, outdoor fun, and lasting friendships.

“I am looking forward to honoring Capon Springs and Farms, who won the 2013 SBA Family-Owned Small Business of the Year award,” said Congresswoman Capito.  “I also look forward to joining the SBA and SBDC in celebrating West Virginia’s family-owned businesses.   Not only do family-owned businesses create much needed jobs, but they represent the heart and soul of West Virginia.  Just like our state’s rich history, they symbolize generations of hard work and sacrifice.”

Criteria for Family-Owned Small Business of the Year include: evidence of success measured by sales and profits, employment opportunities, voluntary efforts to support the community, and potential for long-term business success and economic growth.

“Businesses like Capon Springs and Farms are important to the economic wellbeing of not only West Virginia, but the entire nation,” said SBA Mid-Atlantic Regional Administrator Natalia Olson-Urtecho, who is attending the award celebration.  “Family-owned businesses are the core of America’s entrepreneurial spirit.  Our earliest businesses were family owned, and many are now household names across the globe.”

Beth Ludewig and Christina Lundberg, both from the West Virginia SBDC, co-nominated Capon Springs and Farms for the award. Lundberg, center manager and business coach of the SBDC Eastern Panhandle office, also received a 2013 Small Business Week award for Minority Small Business Champion.

Capon Springs received recognition in May during the Teaming to Win Conference. Other 2013 award winner categories included Small Business Person of the Year, Small Business Exporter of the Year, Home-based Business Champion, and Minority Small Business Champion.
