Chief of Staff,
Allegheny Science & Technology
By Pagett Dusic
Stephanie Pethtel, chief of staff at Allegheny Science & Technology, has built an impressive career rooted in her passion for leadership, community and making a difference. She has grown from a young woman in Fairmont, WV, to a senior leadership position at one of the most prominent companies in the state.
Pethtel has a love for golf that began at an early age. She spent many hours at the Fairmont Field Club where her grandfather managed the pro shop. Surrounded by the game, her competitive streak quickly emerged. As the only girl among boys, she was determined to keep up and prove herself.
“I was always eager to win, and while I didn’t succeed every time, my confidence, determination and competitiveness kept me coming back, ready to face the challenge again,” Pethtel says.
Like many, Pethtel experienced moments of uncertainty about her future career. While she once dreamed of becoming a teacher or a dance instructor, it wasn’t until she reflected on her father’s influence that she found her calling. Her father, a senior vice president at MVB Bank, played a significant role in inspiring her career in marketing and outreach. His ability to care for customers and give back to the community left a lasting impression on Pethtel.
Pethtel’s career began in food and beverage at Muriale’s Italian Kitchen, where she learned valuable lessons about professionalism, courtesy and service. In her first professional role as a program coordinator at the High Technology Foundation, she gained insight into government contracting and developed a strong network of connections. Over the years, she held key roles, including assistant projects director for U.S. Congressman Alan Mollohan.
Now, as chief of staff under the direction of CEO Arria Hines, Pethtel is able to break down gender barriers and pave the way for future female leaders through her work.
“It’s been a privilege to work with Arria,” Pethtel says. “I’ve never met anyone who thinks outside the box like she does, who sees the glass not just half full but overflowing and who truly finds the good in everyone. She has pushed me to step out of my comfort zone, which has provided so many exciting opportunities.”
Another significant influence on Pethtel’s career was Guy Peduto, a mentor and close friend. He believed in her abilities and encouraged her to see the best in others. Peduto’s focus on building relationships and supporting West Virginia’s growth left a lasting impact on Pethtel.
Beyond her professional achievements, Pethtel gives back to her community. She serves on the Tygart Valley United Way Board of Directors, is an active member of South Ridge Church and participates in initiatives that promote STEM education for school-aged children.
“Community service allows me to give back to the place that shaped me and create positive change, fostering unity and understanding in the process,” she says.
Looking toward the future, Pethtel remains passionate about her work in West Virginia. Despite the demands of her role and balancing life as a working mother, she thrives on the fast-paced nature of her responsibilities.
“I draw strength and motivation from my faith in God, the unwavering support of my amazing family and a deep desire to make a positive impact in my community and state,” Pethtel says. “West Virginia has so much to offer—the beauty of all four seasons, stunning scenery and plenty of outdoor activities—but most importantly, it’s where my family is.”
