Wendy Boyce is the type of person who believes time spent giving back to others is time well spent.
Through her current position as director of Marketing for Wilson Martino Dental, Boyce has been given the opportunity to participate in many different community outreach programs. She teaches dental health to students during Children’s Dental Health Month and organizes the dental office’s annual coat drive, Trick-or-Treat for Our Troops program and West Virginia Healthy Kids Drive – Free Dental Day.
At Wilson Martino, Boyce is a firm believer in the team concept, and she finds motivation in her high-energy co-workers and their sense of team spirit, as well as her employer, Dr. Robert Martino. “Dr. Martino uses the catch phrase ‘two heads are better than one,’ and I have found that to be true in every project, meeting and idea I’ve ever been a part of. Sometimes, you need to bounce an idea off of another person, and I’ve learned it’s OK to ask opinions and learn from others because our successes come from the success of those around us.”
Boyce’s service extends far beyond those opportunities that come with her job. She serves as a member of the West Virginia Junior College Advisory Board, which gives her an opportunity to partner with the school’s dental assisting program, and she is proud to be the West Virginia state director for Freedom Day USA, a national thank you movement designed to give businesses the opportunity to say thank you to our military members and veterans, as well as their immediate family members. Through Freedom Day USA, the business owners provide a thank you offer, such as free dental care or a free meal, small gift or service to show their gratitude. “My father and father-in-law are both veterans,” says Boyce, “so I really appreciate the chance to give back to those who have provided our freedom and the ones who support them at home.”
The wife and mother of two also makes time to volunteer as a cheer coach for the Shinnston Spartans, with whom her daughters cheer, and sits on the Spartans’ board of directors. “I really enjoy being involved in my daughters’ activities and getting to know all of the kids in our community,” she says. “We are advocates for good sportsmanship and helping the kids build confidence and develop friendships both on and off the field. It’s like being a part of a great big family.”
Since Boyce is so involved in her community, she values the people she has met throughout her career. “Professionally, I feel my greatest success has been the relationships I’ve developed over the years with colleagues and co-workers,” she says. “Because of the relationships we have, projects are completed and goals are achieved. We are more successful together than alone, and by lifting each other up, we all rise to the top.”
For this busy mom, planning is the key. “With two daughters in multiple activities and my husband’s work commute being more than an hour away, I am a very scheduled person,” she says. “I enjoy having a plan and laying out the details of that plan ahead of time so there are no surprises. Unfortunately, life doesn’t always work that way. By learning to have a back-up plan or finding other resources, I can be much more flexible and ease up on the daily planning schedule. It’s nice to have a plan, but it’s also nice to know you can flex when needed.”
Despite juggling her job, her community service and her family, Boyce doesn’t sweat the challenge of finding balance because she says it’s all part of life. “The greatest gift we can give ourselves is to live 100 percent in the moment of whatever we are doing, whether it’s at a cheer competition, in a board meeting or just hanging out at home,” she says. “If we continuously stress about what’s not getting done, we miss out on the joy of the present.”
