On Friday, March 22, the West Virginia Highlandeers FlingGolf Club officially became the sixth squad to join the World League FlingGolf Club program. Featuring six to eight active players on the five-stop national tour, each team will compete for points against other reginal clubs. The first competition of the 2024 season was held at the Jensen Beach Golf Club near Port St. Lucie, FL, on April 12-14. The top players took 3rd in the women’s, 4th in the masters and 12th in the open men’s divisions. They also put together a two-person team to capture 9th in the men’s pairing.

The next four events will take place in Delaware in May, Pennsylvania in July, San Diego in September and Virginia in October. In addition, there is a special West Virginia regional team event held June 14-16 at Capon Springs resort, home course of 2023 masters champion and WV Highlandeer team captain, Jonathan Bellingham.

“It’s been fun creating and being part of something from scratch,” says Bellingham.

His squad currently consists of four committed players, Jason Ballenger, Jason Ward and Matt McKeown. Four others have expressed interest in joining this inaugural club season and are in training to try out for the team. Each squad is required to include members from the three divisions that count toward points in the overall standings: men, women and masters (ages 55 and older).

As a new pro team just getting started, the WV Highlandeers squad is actively seeking team sponsors to partner with to help cover the costs of uniforms, marketing and competition expenses.
