West Virginia State Parks is encouraging the use of life jackets as part of Operation Life Jacket.
Lakes and streams are some of the most popular attraction in the system’s 49 areas. West Virginia’s state parks offer a wide range of recreation opportunities in natural bodies of water.
“We have some of the best lakes and streams in the country right here in our own back yard,” Parks Chief Sam England said. “They’re an incredible resource, and we want to make sure people are safe while they’re using them. A natural body of water isn’t a controlled environment like a swimming pool. It has currents and debris that might not be visible from the surface. It’s important to respect the power of the natural environment.”
Lake swimming is only permitted in lifeguarded areas at Tygart Lake and Cacapon Resort State Park. Many more waters at state parks and forests are open for fishing and boating, and visitors should use approved personal flotation devices. “We want life jacket use to become a habit,” England said.
