West Virginia State University (WVSU) announced plans this week for WVSU Downtown, a new center to be located at 107 Capitol St. in the heart of downtown Charleston, WV.
WVSU President Ericke Cage was joined by Charleston Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin and other local officials in making the announcement at the future site of the center located on the first floor of the Kanawha Banking and Trust Building, next to the Kanawha County Public Library.
“We are excited to announce our return to downtown Charleston with the establishment of this new center,” says Cage. “WVSU Downtown will serve as a platform for social and economic mobility in the heart of Charleston–it will be a hive of activity where high demand academic programming and social engagement initiatives will converge to support economic growth and social change in West Virginia’s capital city.”
Once completed, WVSU Downtown will feature both space for academic and extension programs, as well space for area alumni, friends and supporters to connect with the university. Space in the center will also be available for rent, so that members of the general public will also be able to take advantage of the downtown location.
“There are nearly 10,000 West Virginia State University alumni here in the Kanawha Valley and we want our new center to serve as a hub for them to reconnect with the university and with each other,” Cage says.
Renovation work on the space that will house the center will begin in the near future with a planned opening date for the center in the fall.
WVSU’s main campus is located in Institute, WV.
