West Virginia State University (WVSU) and the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra (WVSO) are partnering on a series of educational offerings during the upcoming year, including a concert on the school’s Institute campus Thursday, Sept. 25.
Taking place in the auditorium of the Davis Fine Arts Building, the 8 p.m. concert is free and open to the public but tickets must be reserved in advance.
“This really is a wonderful opportunity for our students, faculty and staff to experience a world-class musical performance taking place right here on campus,” said Scott Woodard, interim dean of the College of Arts and Humanities at WVSU. “In addition, the Symphony will be rehearsing two days on campus prior to the performance and our students will have the opportunity to attend and observe these rehearsals.”
This will be the fourth time in as many years that the Symphony has performed at WVSU, and the ongoing relationship has benefited both groups.
“I am so thrilled to be returning to WVSU this fall with a program of music sure to appeal to all tastes,” said Maestro Grant Cooper of the Symphony. “In addition to the music of European masters Schubert and Ravel, we are especially delighted to be able to present the local premiere of a Kentucky-based composer, featuring our principal clarinetist, Bob Turizziani. Orchestral music preserves the masterworks of the past while providing a palette of instrumental colors that enables composers of our own time to express exquisitely their own thoughts.”
The Symphony is West Virginia’s premier performing arts organization, presenting more than 50 concerts annually to audiences throughout the Mountain State. Programs include Capitol Conference Center Symphonic, ZMM Pops and City National Bank Family Discovery Series, performances by the Montclaire String Quartet, collaboration with the Charleston Ballet to perform “The Nutcracker” and an award-winning education program. The Symphony’s home is the world-class Maier Foundation Performance Hall at the Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences in Charleston.
Tickets for the Sept. 25 show may be reserved by calling the WVSU College of Arts and Humanities at (304) 766-3196. Tickets can then be picked up at the box office in the Davis Fine Arts Building beginning at 6 p.m. the evening of the concert.
