Wild, Wonderful West Virginia (GoToWV) will “canstruct” the Braxton County Monster for the Canstruction 2015 competition April 11, 2015 during the West Virginia Home Show at the Charleston Civic Center.
“We’re excited to celebrate one of West Virginia’s fascinating legends while also promoting the positive impact we can have in our communities,” says Commissioner of Tourism Amy Shuler Goodwin.
Canstruction is a national organization that hosts regional competitions, exhibitions and events showcasing colossal structures made entirely out of cans of food. The completed designs will remain on display at the Charleston event through April 14, after which all canned foods will be donated to the Covenant House food pantry.
The GoToWV team “canstructed” part of the Braxton County Monster as a preview during last month’s West Virginia Adventure Day at the Legislature.
“I’m looking forward to participating in the competition. We appreciate the support received from members of the industry in building this design,” GoToWV Canstruction leader Jamie Cope said.
An estimated 500 cans are needed to complete the 7-foot-tall Braxton County Monster. Those wishing to support the project are welcome to drop off canned food by March 31 at Wild, Wonderful West Virginia, 90 MacCorkle Ave. SW, South Charleston, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The current design calls for the 15 oz. size of Chef Boyardee Lasagna, Beefaroni or Beef Ravioli; or the 14.5 oz. size of Del Monte Sweet Peas or Cut Green Beans.
