West Virginia business fundamentals workshops are free this May, thanks to a first-time sponsorship program between the West Virginia Small Business Development Center (WV SBDC) and First Microloan of West Virginia.

First Microloan of West Virginia is sponsoring online and in-person WV SBDC fundamentals workshops May 1 through 31. The sponsorship allows WV SBDC to offer the workshops without the standard $35 registration fee.

“First Microloan of West Virginia is proud to build on our partnership with the WV SBDC,” said Dan Reitz. “The business fundamentals workshop is important for West Virginians who are looking to start or expand their small businesses. Our team will continue to work with the business coaches and their clients to create jobs and leverage capital for continued economic growth and opportunity in the Mountain State.”

“Year after year, First Microloan of West Virginia has earned recognition as Small Business Week Award West Virginia Microlender of the Year,” WV SBDC State Director said Erika Bailey. “The free workshops sponsored by First Microloan are an appropriate way to kick off National Small Business Week, April 29-May 5.”

Organizations interested in sponsoring any month after May can contact Liz Coffman with the WV SBDC Program Lead Center, elizabeth.a.coffman@wv.gov, 304-957-2080.

The WV SBDC workshops are designed specifically for people who are thinking of starting a business or have had a business for one year or less. The workshop covers topics such as how to develop a business plan, how to apply for a loan, and other essential information an entrepreneur needs to make their business a success. To register for an online or in-person workshop, visit www.wvsbdc.com and click on the Training Calendar.

After the participant completes an online or in-person workshop, the entrepreneur may want to take the next step by scheduling a meeting with a WV SBDC business coach. The confidential meetings are one-on-one between the entrepreneur and the WV SBDC business coach.

As part of the commemoration of National Small Business Week, the winners of the 2018 West Virginia Small Business Administration (WV SBA) Small Business Week Award will be honored during an event Wednesday, May 2, in the Robert H. Mollohan Research Center, Fairmont.

Small business owners and entrepreneurs can join the SBA and industry experts for the National Small Business Week Twitter Chat on Friday, May 4 at noon Eastern Time. The discussion will focus on tips and techniques to start and grow a small business successfully. Join or follow the conversation with #SmallBusinessWeek.
