The West Virginia State University (WVSU) Economic Development Center (EDC) announces the latest Creators Program workshops targeting filmmakers and musicians.
On Tuesday, Feb. 25, at 7:15 p.m., filmmaker and author Eric Douglas will screen his documentary “West Virginia Voices of War” and discuss the tools and skills needed for “backpack” documentary production. Backpack production is filmmaking using simple tools available to anyone and with little or no budget.
“Advances in digital recording technology make it possible for anyone to record, edit and tell their own story,” said Douglas. “You can carry everything that used to require an entire film crew with cameras and audio equipment in a backpack and capture any story that needs to be told.”
The event is part of the program’s free Creators Talk series.
On Saturday, March 1, at 10 a.m., musician Chuck Biel will host “Music for New Media 102.” Participants will discover the meaning behind such terms as loops, sequences, sampling, MIDI, ASDR and sync, as well as how to implement these devices in creative endeavors.
“This workshop will teach participants how to successfully take their passion for music and navigate the musical world by using these tools with clarity and confidence,” said Biel.
Attendees at Biel’s workshop will receive a Certificate of Participation that will count as two units toward a Creators Certificate, awarded after the completion of 20 Creators Program workshop units.
Launched in 2012, the Creators Program is a series of community workshops focused on essential skills and knowledge needed to create for mass media and art. WVSU partners with the Arts Council of Kanawha Valley and the West Virginia Film Office on the series. Workshops are designed for people of all skill levels, including students and others interested in expanding their creative endeavors.
Admission to Douglas’s Creators Talk is free. The cost to attend Biel’s workshop is $20. Students are eligible for a discounted rate of $10, and registration is requested for all. To register, visit www.digiso.org and click on “The Creators Program” tab.
