A total of 185 West Virginia University students will be honored with the President’s Volunteer Service Award by the Center for Civic Engagement.

The President’s Volunteer Service Award recognizes the very best of volunteerism and service learning at WVU. Students who have completed at least 100 hours of service during a calendar year are eligible to receive the award. The Center for Civic Engagement serves to verify service hours at WVU.

Each recipient receives a certificate signed by President Barack Obama and a lapel pin.

During 2012, WVU students contributed a total of more than 32,000 hours of community service. According to http://independentector.org, the estimated value of volunteer time is $21.79 per hour, which would mean WVU students in 2012 contributed nearly $700,000 to communities.

The award levels are as follows:

  • 110 students awarded Bronze (100-174 hours completed)
  • 36 students awarded Silver (175-249 hours completed)
  • 39 students awarded Gold (250-plus hours completed)

The President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation created the President’s Volunteer Service Award program as a way to thank and honor Americans who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service. The program continues today as an initiative of the Corporation for National and Community Service.

Encouraging a campus culture of service, the Center for Civic Engagement at WVU works to build sustainable partnerships with local community partners and provide opportunities for lifelong learning. Students can find service opportunities on iServe, the online service management system managed by the Center for Civic Engagement and by contacting the CCE directly.
