Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based positive youth development program that teaches life skills while girls in third-through-eighth grade train to run a 5K. Volunteer-led teams meet twice a week throughout the season and participate in lessons that foster confidence, build peer connections and establish life-long healthy habits. This season, there are nearly 600 girls enrolled from North Central West Virginia counties including Barbour, Harrison, Marion, Monongalia, Preston and Wetzel.
For the 2018 and 2019 seasons, Girls on the Run of North Central WV partnered with neighborhood health care provider MedExpress as the title sponsor and choice urgent care for the program. Several MedExpress employees also joined as coaches this year.
“At MedExpress, we know how important it is for young girls to take part in activities that have a positive impact on their health and wellbeing from an early age,” said Danin Greusel, MedExpress Community Involvement Manager. “This year, I had the privilege of coaching for Girls on the Run of North Central West Virginia, and it’s been incredible to see such a positive transformation among the participants.”
The program takes place in all 50 states and the District of Columbia and has been benefiting girls for over 20 years. Girls on the Run is the largest 5K series in the U.S. by number of events with over 330 events across the country last year.
