Skiing and tubing at Canaan Valley Resort in Davis, West Virginia, is pure winter fun. The downhill skiing at Canaan combines natural and machine-made snow.
“Winter recreation at Canaan is, in one word – great,” said Cary Sponaugle, director of sales and marketing at this Tucker County destination.
US Hotel and Resort manages the state park, including the new 160-room lodge, food services, new beginners slope and “magic carpet” at the tubing park and ski slopes.
Canaan Valley features 43 slopes and trails with a summit elevation of 4,280 feet and a vertical drop of 850 feet. There are five lifts, a freestyle Terrain Park, 10-lane Tube Park, and a covered outdoor ice skating rink. The resort has snowmaking capabilities on more than 75 percent of the trails and can produce up to 500 tons of snow a day.
The resort is featuring new menus and après-ski opportunities at the various lounges this winter. Shuttle service from Canaan Valley Lodge to the slopes has improved. New events with NASTAR and the newly dedicated Terrain Park add to the winter experience.
Dining at Canaan Valley includes the Hickory Dining Room; the Laurel Lounge, with Wednesday Wings and Thursday Taco nights; and Seasons Café at Canaan Valley Lodge. Upcoming events at the resort include New Year’s Bash with Nina Sharp and also a Family Party (Dec. 31); Martin Luther King Weekend ski package; Rail Jams, Super Bowl Party, (Feb. 1); Mardi-Gras – Fat Tuesday special (Feb. 21) and Wild Thing Weekend (March 13).
Blackwater Falls State Park is nearby and features a lodge, cabins and a new sledding run and conveyor system. Snowmaking is a new feature at Blackwater’s sled run with sledding in full operation by the new year, weather conditions permitting.
