Saturday, June 4, is National Trails Day, and West Virginia state parks are celebrating by offering special guided hikes on many of their trails. National Trails Day is sponsored by the American Hiking Society and is designed to encourage people to go outside, exercise and enjoy all that nature has to offer. Guided hikes are led by park naturalists or volunteers who are knowledgeable about the areas and natural aspects of the trails.
“Public parks, organizations and outdoor enthusiasts recognize walking and hiking as healthy lifestyle activities. In West Virginia, the state park system supports the country’s largest celebration of trails by inviting everyone to come out and walk a trail,” said West Virginia State Parks Chief Sam England. “We will offer several guided walks and hikes, but visitors may also set their own pace and trail selection if they wish.”
West Virginia state parks participating in National Trails Day include Beech Fork, Blackwater Falls, Blennerhassett Island, Cacapon Resort, Cass Scenic Railroad, North Bend, Pipestem Resort, Twin Falls Resort and Watoga.
Hikers and walkers on June 4 are encouraged to keep a mileage log, available online at www.wvstateparks.com under “Special Notices.” Log sheets also are available at state park offices or front desk areas. Information is recorded and submitted by the hiker and mailed to the central state park office. A participation certificate and trails patch are mailed to participants after June 30.
As additional incentive, participation in a National Trails Day hike counts toward completion of the 2016 Chief’s Challenge. England is challenging all ages to hike 100 miles or more on state park or forest trails in calendar year 2016. Those 100 miles should include participation in at least 10 miles of hikes, walks or strolls at a state park or forest led by a state park naturalist or activities coordinator. The Challenge is free, but online registration is required. Information is available at www.wvstateparks.com
