The Mom’s Choice Awards has given a Gold designation to Shovelful of Sunshine by Stacie Vaughn Hutton, published by Headline Books Inc.
Shovelful of Sunshine is a children’s book paying tribute to coal miners and their families by a woman who grew up in the West Virginia coal fields.
“My book was inspired by the letters of coal miners, many of which are Shakespearean,” Hutton said. “I want the whole nation to know that miners and their families are courageous and patriotic – that miners helped to build this country. America needs to know exactly who these men and women are – why they’re so important to life in our great nation.”
Illustrated by Cheryl Harness, Shovelful of Sunshine is a story of hope and inspiration that shows how young Meggie Gwinn copes with her father’s perilous job as a coal miner.
On the book cover, “Rocket Boys/October Sky” author Homer Hickam says, “Shovelful of Sunshine is a delightful book about a coal miner’s young daughter that I thoroughly enjoyed. It is a thoughtful story that is also superbly illustrated. I am proud to recommend it!”
“America’s Got Talent” winner, recording artist and coal miner’s son Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. wrote the foreword and says, “Shovelful of Sunshine will give you a glimpse into the lives of these wonderful people that I’m so thankful to call my friends.”
