Officials at West Virginia University Hospitals-East, in conjunction with the Martinsburg Berkeley County Chamber of Commerce, held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Cancer & Infusion Center, a department of City Hospital.
The $1.3 million center, which opened to patients earlier this month, is located on the second floor of the Dorothy A. McCormack Center. The 7,200 square foot suite includes five exam rooms, a procedure room, a dedicated lab and pharmacy, and 12 patient chairs (eight open spaces and four private rooms) for chemotherapy/infusions.
“The new center is state-of-the-art, allowing us to bring our cancer services together to provide better care for the patients,” stated Dr. Eric Bonnem, hematologist/oncologist and the center’s medical director. Offices for the hematologists/oncologists, a cancer registrar, and a dictation area for visiting physicians seeing infusion patients in the suite are also housed in the center.
According to Bonnem, cancer patients benefit given that chemotherapy and infusion therapy, radiation therapy, medical oncologists, and three general surgeons are all located in the same building for patient convenience. “This new cancer center is truly a gift to the community,” he added.
The center has been seeing between 42 and 63 patients per day since opening on January 2, stated Nursing Director Terry Reser, RN. This all-in-one facility is fully staffed with RNs, LPNs, and other highly trained health professionals.
